Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Centura Android 4.0 Full Review

The Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Centura is an entry level sub $100 sub compact CDMA Android with excellent features despite the low price. If you’re looking for an affordable entry level device, then the Centura is probably the phone you want to get. It’s quite affordable yet you still get Samsung quality and features. What’s even better is the fact that this guy offers Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Check Centura Availability in you Area

The Samsung Galaxy Centura is a fairly straight forward device. The main selling point here is the very compact size. The Centura comes with a 3.5″ and measures just a bit over 4.5″ tall. The layout is pretty typical for an entry level phone. You get the 3 button Android layout just below the screen which happen to be of the capacitive touch variety. Around the screen, you find a chrome look bezel that looks pretty attractive yet not flashy. Overall, this is a pretty basic phone in the looks department and offers a very familiar look feel.

Let’s remember that this is an entry level phone, as such there’s not much by way of eye popping hardware here but don’t let you discourage you from purchasing this phone because it is a fine performer. The Centura comes with the ever familiar 800 mhz processor. As I mentioned earlier, the screen measures just 3.5″ diagonally. The last bit of hardware worth mentioning is the 3.0 mp camera which is a little weak but let us not forget that this is an entry level device. As you would expect, the device is all plastic including the screen. Despite the entry level hardware, however, the Android 4.0 OS really makes this phone perform like a much higher end device.  Animations are very smooth and the phone is very responsive to touches. So for under 100 bucks you get an excellent phone that I would rather have over the similarly priced Huawei devices also available through Straight Talk.  For example, none of the Straight Talk Huawei phones are cable of playing Netflix but the Samsung Centura does it effortlessly and smoothly.

The Samsung Galaxy Centura offers the very popular and powerful Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. I really like this OS much more than any previous Android version because it makes these entry level phones perform much better than they ever did before. Android 4.0 running on 800mhz makes previous versions look like down right slugs even when ran on the same hardware specs. One thing to mention is that Samsung has customized the Android 4.o OS so it doesn’t quite have the look feel as some of the other Straight Talk Samsung 4.0 phones. For example, the home screen swipe animation is different on this phone than on previous Straight Talk Android 4.0 phones.  Samsung has also included widgets you can drop on your home screens which you won’t find on other phones.

Of course all of the standard apps work great on this phone so you can wath Youtube, download apps using the Google play app store, use Navigation, Google maps etc. This phone does not have any extra apps worth mentioning out of the box so you will need to download your favorites such as Facebook, Netflix, etc from the Google app store.

The Samsung Centura is the best entry level Android offered by Straight Talk by a long shot in the software department. While you don’t get a lot of extras by way of apps, the Android 4.0 OS makes this phone feel like a much higher end phone than it actually is. I will go so far as to say this phone performs just as well as Andoid 2.x phones costing 2x as much.

Calling Area and Calling Plan

The Samsung Galaxy Centura is a CDMA phone so it will be activated with either Sprint or Verizon. You will need the $45 unlimited plan with this phone. Note that this phone will not work with the Straight Talk $30 plan.

The Samsung Galaxy Centura doesn’t bring anything new and exciting to the Straight Talk line up. It does however, bring Android 4.0 to the sub $100 phone. This alone makes the Samsung Galaxy Centura the best entry level phone currently in the Straight Talk line up. Expect this phone to perform like a 1gb processor device running earlier Android version. I’d recommend this phone to anyone that wants a high performing phone for under $100.
